Tulbagh Wine Route
Tulbagh is the most northerly district of the Cape Winelands and our wines are regularly awarded gold medals and accolades around the world. Tulbagh enjoys some of the most diverse and ideal conditions for viticulture in the Cape Winelands. There are many fine wine estates in the Tulbagh valley, which are open to the public for wine tastings, sales and cellar tours. Tulbagh Wine Route’s terroir has been recognised as among the finest in the country. The following wine estates are our personal favourites, and are less than a five-minute drive from the Quarter while the other wine estates are listed in the ‘Useful Links’ box to the right.
Krone
Established in 1710, this well-known Tulbagh wine farm is among South Africa’s oldest, and is most famous for ‘Krone Borealis’, a premium (method Champenoise) sparkling wine. The wine cellars, manor house, wine tasting facilities and roof terrace are architecturally spectacular, and the views over the Tulbagh valley are out of this world. Don’t miss the ‘champagne’ cellar tour at 11am and 3pm. (Sat 11am only). Spend the afternoon on the roof terrace under the mighty Saronsberg Mountain, tasting five vintages of ‘Cape Champagne’.

Saronsberg
Under the mighty mountains that bear her name, Saronsberg Wine Estate crept onto the map in 1997, and deservedly has become one of the most popular wine estates in the Tulbagh valley. The contemporary cellar is an architectural gem and has a beautifully finished tasting room. Set in gardens beside a lake, also don’t miss the permanent modern art and sculpture exhibition, and other seasonal exhibits. The wines are award-winning reds and whites. Don’t miss the Saronsberg Full Circle and Provenance ‘Rooi’.

Montpellier du Tulbagh
Granted in 1714, the farm has a rich history spanning 300 years. The traditional werf focusses on the historic manor house and is surrounded by almost magical gardens, peppered with follies, giant oak trees and ladders that disappear into the tops of the trees. Wine-tasting is informal and complimented by pizzas and cheese platters on request. When there are weddings on the farm, tastings are conducted in a building away from the main house.
